JUST BE YOUR SELFIE AT TACOMA ART MUSUEM
Psyched to see monumental social media sculpture JUST BE YOUR SELFIE in the Tacoma Art Museum's upcoming Northwest Art Now opening May 14 and continuing until August 21, 2016. Curated by the museum's Chief Curator and Curator of Contemporary and Northwest Art Rock Hushka with Director of the Rubell Family Collection Juan Roselione-Valadez, the exhibition "seeks to illuminate how artists are actively responding to forces shaping our regional identity during this current wave of explosive growth and rapid rebound from the Great Recession."
Originally, JUST BE YOUR SELFIE was a copy with no original, an open sourced meme with endless authors all looking into an infinite mirror of self reflexive reflection. Now it is intended that a new, more critical discourse can be generated from its inclusion in this upcoming exhibition — bringing into focus such issue as digital privilege, the rise of cyber-feminism, metrics-driven clickbaiting and the implosion of the selfie into pointless ubiquity.
As it currently stands, the work will be installed outside the museum at its entrance and accessible 24/7 as it was originally installed in Occidental Park in Seattle from June to September of 2014. See more about the history of JUST BE YOUR SELFIE here.
