IRL IS STRANGE AND BEAUTIFUL
Earlier this year I sold a neon sculpture to a net artist from the collective Art404. The 36 hour trip I took to NYC to install this work in his Greenwich Village apartment was intense and in part documented in an interview with Alex Teplitzky here. Right before I went to the airport to take a redeye flight I took the image below in my studio and tweeted it to him.
Here is what I said about that trip in the aforementioned interview:
Sometimes the ripples hit other shores. For instance, I sold the work IRL to a net/new media artist recently over Twitter. I had been posting carefully captured Polaroids of works from MMXIV knowing the bulk of them would make an impact. Like I knew, over time, the collection of them would sink in and boom… this artist dropped the tweet that began the relationship. I was already going to be in NYC for 36 hours to attend the ARTFCITY party and set it up so that I could install the work in his West Village apartment and project space as well. So, a work generated in Beijing, fabricated and displayed in Seattle, shared over Twitter, and brought in my backpack on a redeye flight in the dead of winter was installed in NYC. All from casting a single stone.
Well, I can honestly say that I had no idea those ripples would end up landing the work in VICE, hovering over the head of my friend CrackDoubt in a photo shoot about smoking diplomas, credit cards and DVD's among other pursuits. Even my girl Lindsay got a shout out. Life is strange and beautiful indeed.
